PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Another wet day is in the forecast for the Pittsburgh area as the potential for some severe storms heads our way.
Forecasters are calling for some showers and thunderstorms to move in this afternoon. The high today will be in the mid-80s.
KDKA’s Jon Burnett says there will be the potential for scattered storms from 1 to 2 p.m. and on.
“There is activity developing to our south and west, and with the heating of the day, the atmosphere [is] beginning now to percolate, bubble and boil,” said Burnett. “I think we’ll see showers and storms, potentially strong.”
The storms are advancing out of the Midwest and heading toward the mid-Atlantic.
“The storm prediction center in Oklahoma City has said that we are in the slight risk category and that would include small hail, lots of cloud to ground lightning, damaging winds possibly and the potential at least for heavy downpours,” Burnett added.
He says the best chance for severe weather is between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.
“It looks like things will remain wet for us tonight, tomorrow – not a totally wash out, but showers and storms anytime tomorrow and early Saturday – before this front finally leaves the area,” Burnett said.
The good news is that the Memorial Day weekend is looking better.
“There is a dry wedge to our west that’s now poised in the Dakotas and upper Midwest,” said Burnett. “That will be working its way toward us as we head into the weekend, and it looks like most of the holiday weekend will be rain free, but there will be a chance for rain every day except for Sunday.”
